Merida, Yucatan, Mexico (30 minutes from The Mayan Gypsy boutique art hotel in Progreso)

Since the Spanish conquest, Mérida has remained a city that is rich in colonial history and has been the cultural capital of the entire Yucatán Peninsula.  Its streets are adorned with heavenly architecture and beautiful colonial properties, narrow streets, broad central plazas, parks and the region’s best museums. It’s a perfect place from which to kick off your adventure into the rest of Yucatán state.

There are great affordable restaurants, thriving markets and events happening just about every night somewhere in the downtown area. Merida has long been popular with travelers as it is a tourist town that goes beyond the hubbub of the over-visited resort towns of  Quintana Roo.

It is an not only a gem in Mexico, but as the capital of Yucatán state, Mérida is also the cultural crossroads of the region, and there’s something just a bit elitist about Mérida: the people who live here have a beautiful town and culture, and they know it.

Merida and Progreso beach are very safe desinations. If you have any questions on this area feel free to email us your questions.
